Gambling Habit Hacker

An app that helps lower-risk users reduce unplanned gambling by reinforcing goals and self-control

The research team at Deakin University and the University of Auckland wanted to create an implementation planning app for individuals at lower risk of gambling harm, using in-the-moment information about gambling behavior, urges, and mood to deliver tailored interventions. The goal was to strengthen users’ intentions and confidence to stay on track with their personal goals.

Using Cogniss, they were able to create Gambling Habit Hacker, an app that adapts to users’ changing needs. Built with Ecological Momentary Assessments (EMAs) and Just-in-Time Adaptive Interventions (JITAIs), the app prompts users three times a day to reflect on urges, mood and confidence, then delivers personalised strategies right when they’re needed.

Key features of the app

  • Individual goal setting to limit or stop gambling activity

  • Push notifications for check-ins

  • Frequent check-ins to record intention, gambling urges, and mood

  • Personalized strategies for coping based on check-in responses

  • Progress tracking

The app was tested in a 28-day micro-randomised controlled trial (Micro-RCT) with high-frequency gamblers. At the six-month mark, 47% of participants reported significant improvement or recovery. In follow-up trials, 64% of users reported considerable improvement.

This app is being funded by the NSW government and is now publicly available via GambleAware.
