GamblingLess: In-The-Moment
An app that is designed to provide 24/7 support to help users take immediate steps to address their gambling behavior
The research team at Deakin University and the University of Auckland wanted to create a relapse prevention app for people experiencing gambling harm, one that can be used on its own or alongside other treatments. The goal was to help people who want to quit or cut down, by strengthening their intentions and confidence to stay on track.
Using Cogniss, they developed GamblingLess: In-The-Moment, which incorporates Ecological Momentary Assessment (EMA) and Just-in-Time Adaptive Interventions (JITAIs). The app prompts users to check in on urges, triggers, expectations and behaviour, and provides discreet, proactive support when users are most vulnerable.
Key features of the app
Quick check-ins prompts that record urges, triggers, expectations, and gambling behavior
Tailored intervention strategies to curb urges, tackle triggers, and explore expectations
Micro-randomized trial design to test and refine the intervention
The app was tested in a 28-day micro-randomized controlled trial with at-risk gamblers. At the six-month mark, 67% reported recovery or significant improvement in gambling symptoms. Subsequent feasibility studies showed sustained engagement and impact, with 62% reporting full recovery.
This app is being funded by the NSW government and is now publicly available via GambleAware.
