Health Innovation West Midlands launches Clinnovate WM first Cohort, powered by Cogniss

Health Innovation West Midlands has officially launched the first Cohort of Clinnovate WM. Powered by Cogniss's specialised no-code platform, ten clinicians from across the West Midlands have been selected to develop their patient-facing digital health solutions.

Clinnovate WM is a digital health innovation Programme designed exclusively for clinical staff across the West Midlands, from GPs and nurses to allied health professionals and specialists. Participants have a concept for an innovative app that addresses a real clinical need.

Each innovator in the Programme receives a fully funded six-month package that includes app development, testing and validation. Using Cogniss's no-code platform, participants can transform their frontline insights into working digital health solutions ready for real-world implementation.

This first Cohort brings together clinicians from 9 NHS Trusts across the region. Their projects span a range of healthcare challenges:

  • HERO helps patients prepare safely and effectively for elective orthopaedic surgery through personalised lifestyle and wellbeing assessments.

  • My Sexual Wellbeing (MySW) is a comprehensive sexual health education and wellbeing app that promotes informed decision-making, emotional wellbeing and a positive relationship with one's own sexuality.

  • Meriden BFT supports Behavioural Family Therapy for individuals with serious mental health diagnoses and their carers and family members.

  • My Surgery Companion supports women undergoing laparoscopic gynaecological surgery, helping to reduce inequalities in understanding and recovery outcomes.

  • Sparrow connects the right inhaler to the right patient, with educational content on lifestyle, inhaler technique and adherence.

  • Clinical Motion delivers personalised, evidence-based exercise prescriptions for cardiac, pulmonary and surgical prehabilitation patients.

  • MaterniSee is a digital communication tool for maternity services that supports service users whose first language is not English through speech, text and image-based options.

  • CritEcoCare enables clinicians, buyers and suppliers to assess the sustainability score of clinical products at point of care.

  • MyFracture is a digital recovery companion for patients discharged from A&E or fracture clinics with stable fractures, providing personalised recovery timelines and physiotherapy guidance.

  • RESTORE supports adults recovering from traumatic nerve injury with psychologically informed education addressing both physical and psychological challenges in early recovery.

The Cogniss platform contains more than 100 pre-built features as building blocks to enable the creation and iteration of sophisticated patient-facing digital health apps. Beyond development, Cogniss also simplifies the compliance, interoperability and distribution of health apps, resulting in a much more efficient procurement pathway for compliant patient-centric solutions.

Dr Lloyd Humphreys, Managing Director at Cogniss, said:

"Our vision is to simplify the development and commercialisation of digital health by the experts who understand patient needs best. With a proven model that continues to scale across the NHS, we’re excited to empower subject matter experts in the West Midlands region to co-develop solutions that make a difference where they’re needed most.”

Following the Programme, apps can be published as standalone solutions, becoming available via the web or app stores, or remain within the Clinnovate WM ecosystem, ready for further development or funding.

The Clinnovate WM Programme builds on the proven model established through Cogniss's partnership with Health Innovation East for the Digital Health Hub, now a finalist for Best Educational Programme at the 2026 HSJ Partnership Awards. That model, with structured support, shared infrastructure and low-barrier access to development technology, is now being adopted across regions.
